Abstract

The fight against Asylum logic in the Backlands of San Francisco River has gradually emerged from a partnership between actors/authors of Univasf and of the local networks of mental health care, particularly in the cities of Juazeiro (in Bahia State) and Petrolina (in Pernambuco State), through extension activities. This article presents the steps that led to the creation of the “Backlands Antimanicomial Mobilization Group” (Numans) in the region, highlighting actions which have stimulated the debate on the consolidation of psychiatric reform and its implications in the areas of management, care and formation of health professionals. It is intended that Numans gets increasingly stronger, as a social movement, being undertaken by community leaders, and contributing to the realization of an integral mental health care network in the São Francisco Valley
