Abstract

An account of the political pedagogical project “Universidade das Quebradas”, an extension course of the Contemporary Culture Advanced Program of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) Language School. The project, developed and coordinated by Professors Heloísa Buarque de Hollanda and Numa Ciro, was originated from the perception of the powerful and rich cultural production with which the artists reinvent the city. The course objective is to create grounds for a mutual exchange of knowledge between academy and artists. The Project is an intervening action of some members of the Universidade das Quebradas as it moves from the premises of UFRJ to the Museum of Art of the City of Rio de Janeiro (acronym “MAR – Museu de Arte do Rio”, that spells like the Portuguese word for SEA, “mar”). By questioning old concepts and proposing new ones, the research group intends to materialize processes that may contribute to redraw the map of the city, reinventing its tensions and accommodating the different rivers that fl ow into the sea (MAR).
